The Giacometti, a family of creators

The photographer from Switzerland Peter Knapp has written a book with Beat Stutzer dedicated to the Giacometti family. Printed in 2017 at the Oak publishing house he wanted with the support of collectors highlighting a retrospect at the Maeght Foundation but he didn't succeed to do that because the Covid has broken this idea. Peter Knapp proposes to speak about Giacometti art making over a century between 1888 and 1986. He deals with the father (Giovanni), the cousin (Augusto) and the three Giovanni sons Alberto, Diego and Bruno. Giovanni the father belongs to the modern painters from Switzerland  (Ferdinand Holder and Cuno Amiet) and tributes landscapes in an colorful impressionnists art style. The cousin Augusto do the same but he follows the Nabis a vanguard movement where imagination plays an important part. Diego and Alberto begin by being painters but quickly decide to make sculpture where they will become famous. The other son Bruno chooses arhitecture and builds many buildings all over the world. It seems to be difficult finding common points between these men but it exists. Colors play an important part for Giovanni and Augusto annoucing the fawism. Landscapes and animals have attracted Diego and Albeto at the beginning. Alberto and Augusto will follow the 20th century vanguard movements like the futurism and the dadaïsme (Augusto) and the surrealism (Alberto) for finding the inspiration.
