Vita Nuova, New challenges of art in Italy (1960 - 1975)

The Italian contemporary art interest many people but dedicated exhibitions dealing with this kind of art aren't enough except the one in 1981 at the Pompidou Center names "Italian identity, the art in Italy since 1959". The MAMAC of Nice takes the name of a Dante's book the "Vita Nuova" for giving us a landscape of the Italian art making from 1960 to 1975 when the famous film director Pasolini passes away. During this period of time known as the Italian economic miracle the country transforms deeply itself into with the support of the American investments. The Italian industry moves up with the rising of steel industry in the north and also with the digging of raw materials (oil, gas). The result is the building of a middle class following the goal buying TV, cars or electrical appliances. The contemporary Italian artists will find their inspiration inside these changing for twisting this way of doing like the three exhibition themes show. "Vita Nuova, new challenges of art in Italy (1960 - 1975)" proposes first an historical approach towards "A society leaded by picture". After the Neo realism the Italian film directors keep watching the middle class rising and build the Italian comedy a new way of film making where the members of this class are introduced as ridiculous people full of self importance. It will be the last step before more political movies owning a more radical critic of the consumption society. Italy is also confronted to violent strikes (1968, 1969), bombings (Piazza Fontana, 1969), state of emergency (1970) until the end of the 1970's. The Italian artists decide to follow the way of doing adopted by the developed countries artists taking the control of the social topics or involvements (consumption, sex, work, ...) and translating inside their artwork the will of breaking their ancestors rules. The second exhibition theme highlights the result of this thinking. The artists like Pino Pascali does used artistic performance as a tribune for let people speaking. This solution stays between the 1970's radicalism and far from the academicism teaching at universities. The third and last exhibition theme is connected with bodies and the gestures importance. The bodies send many words and messages without saying anything more.
